THEME OF WEEK 1:02(2): La cancha (the football pitch)
2nd February 2015
Art Club with Fundación Junto Con Los Niños - JUCONI
and the Charlotte Miller Art Project in Guayaquil, Ecuador
IDEA AND AIMS: To create the first piece to dress the JUCONI-cmap carnival cart: the football pitch and its players. This was a logical first step knowing just how much our kids in all 4 groups love football, and having seen football pitches proliferate in their carnival cart designs and even in their collages of their homes:
PROCESS 1, to create the football pitch with our Socio Vivienda morning group:
1. A few older children lay out the football pitch lines and markings using tape and white felt on top of the green felt base pre-prepared by the facilitators.
2. Younger children work in small groups to construct the goal posts for both ends of the pitch and cover them in coloured felt.
3. The rest of the children work on constructing the audience seating area by builing steps from carboard that can be spray painted by facilitators later in the office courtyard.
MATERIALS: large green coloured felt for the base, multiple colours in felt, white tape, cardboard, long cardboard tubes, silicone, masking tape, gaffa tape, scissors
1. Cover a toilet roll tube in felt scraps and buttons as clothes. Cut a triangle for the neck and another for the legs.
2. Roll up a ball of cottonwool inside aluminium tinfoil, shaping a longer piece for the neck.
3. Use a sharp pointed awl to pierce a hole through the body and neck and push a pipe cleaner through, to both act as arms and to secure the head and body together.
4. Decorate the head with felt eyes, mouth and woollen hair.
MATERIALS: toilet roll tubes, multiple colours of felt, buttons, silicone, scissors, wool, pipe cleaners
The kids loved the results, and so did our workmates at JUCONI who saw Emily and I set the pitch and players up in the office courtyard for this photo shoot!
