Art Club 1.10: Costume wings

THEME OF WEEK 1:10: Costumes stage 2, wings
25th March and the 6th April 2015
facilitated by the Charlotte Miller Art Project in Guayaquil, Ecuador

IDEA AND AIMS:  For the children to complete the costumes that they will dress up in to present their dance choreography on the day of the pop-up carnival float exhibition by decorating a pair of wings each.

PROCESS:
1.  Facilitators pre-prepare the base of the wings by cutting a semi-circular shape from sheeting (we originally used white sheets found in the office, but after observing the results in Sergio Toral felt that it would be better to work on a yellow base in Socio Vivienda, so bought lengths of yellow sheeting).  Make a split up the middle of the semi-circle and attach lengths of cloth to the inside of the neck with staples.
2. Facilitators, in the workshop space, ask the children one-by-one to try on a pair of wings by tying the cloth around their neck. Then ask them to lift first one arm, then the other, and staple a length of elastic to each wing at the position of their wrist, measure how long it needs to be to fit around their wrist, cut to this length and staple into a loop.
3. Children: decorate their wings as desired, using any combination of blue and yellow paint, blue and yellow felt solid 'u' shapes (suggesting feathers) and glitter.

MATERIALS: white or yellow sheeting, fabric scissors, stapler and staples, elastic, cloth scraps, blue and yellow poster paint, blue and yellow felt scraps cut into solid 'u' shapes, silicone, camera.

At the time of writing, not only are these costumes finished and ready for the big day, the kids are already one week into their dance rehearsals with guest dance teachers, Thamára and Sofía, which the kids are loving.  Plus the invitations to the street exhibition and performance are printed out and in the process of being distributed to the children and their families:
