Day 2 Villa Alegre: Sharing Our Portfolios

Settling into the house and one another’s company, today my eye was caught by the activity of the various groups of ants busying away in various points of the garden and house.

Throughout the course of our portfolio presentations I was struck by how varied the different approaches and focuses of we different artists are.  I was also moved by the passion and intensity with which folk are dedicated to their work.  So the ant struck me as an apt symbol, making me think of us each as ants from various groups who have temporarily joined to share our methods and perspectives with energy and intensity.   In the way that ants are practical and community minded, what we and the neighbourhood groups will produce in collaboration over the course of this residency will hopefully be useful for the community long-term.

The lush green of the leaves also had me thinking of the fertility of these initial stages of a project, when the exact manner in which it will be realized is as yet uncertain, but what is known in that the soil is rich and there are many seeds planted there waiting to grow tall and far-reaching.

Reflecting on our collective energy and the rich soil we each bring with us J
