An intriguing and delightful mix of sharp satirical wit and sweet shyness, Alejandro warmed to Daniela and I as we explained what we were up to with our projects, danced for a fleeting moment a cheek-to-cheek Columbian dance step and listened to his deliberately cheesy choice of a typical Argentinian song (that I never caught the name of but had something to do with a child singing on a cloud??!).
Kindred souls-from-Saturn in their cheeky and surreal impishness-ness, Alejandro and Daniela were pretty taken with one another, and I'm sure a long-term friendship has come out this chance encounter at the workshop counter where Alejandro was slicing cardboard down to book-cover size when we walked in.
Alejandro is one of this local Buenos Aires collective known as Eloisa Cartonera which take both famous and new and upcoming Latin American writers and publish their work in hand-made books mostly sold for 10 Argentine pesos (about £1.30). Based in La Boca, Eloisa Cartonera was founded in 2003 in a period when apparently many collectives were forming in response to the national financial crisis of 2001, explaining the co-operative mind-set of Argentinian creatives that I've been so impressed by since arriving in Buenos Aires. This community focused publishing house buys the cardboard it uses from urban pickers known as 'cartoneros' and members of the collective like Alejandro cut it down to cover-size to bind the photocopied pages of the book, hand-painting titles and images on by hand.
The resulting books are light-weight and delightful, and their contents vary from kids stories to heavy literature.
