A challenge I've overcome: To show that which I believe
A dream for my future: New friends
A hope for the global village: Love and Peace
Toro with his gorgeous dog Nina, who is so well educated she can sit up on a chair and wait patiently as human conversations circle around her.
Toro and Camilla chat, surrounded by Toro's sculptures in the studio of friend and fellow local artist, Diego.
Daniela and I had the good fortune of meeting this brilliant sculptor Omar Musis Toro on our first afternoon visiting port region of Buenos Aires, la Boca. We'd happened upon the gem of book-binder collective Eloisa Cartonera and were happily chatting away with one of its members, Alejandro, when Toro and his gorgeous and super-well-education canine companion Nina chanced to pass by. Toro was warm and friendly and curious to know what we were up to. He gave us the link to his work online this day and later in the week when we passed through again invited us to look at the sculptures at a studio around the corner. He and friend Diego were preparing to exhibit the following day at a local fair where national and international poets and artists were going to gather. This was the moment when he and Diego immediately invited Camilla, Daniela and I to join in, demonstrating the fantastic Argentinean openness to collaboration.
Toro's sculptures, which reminded me of UK's Mutoid Waste, are large vivacious characters made from scrap metal that local folk bring him, including hub caps, barrels, bike chains, saddles, springs, pedals, cassettes and frames. A brilliant example of giving new life to discarded objects, hence the forwarding of his work on the previous post-card-blogs to both Emma and Mike.
Toro adding to our time-lapse street-art 'tool' drawing :-)
Toro, gracias por ser tan abierto compartir tu trabajo con nosotros, espero que pasaste un exelente fin de semana en la feria. Suerte en todo tus proyectos. Un abrazo, nos vemos!
:-)
