Dear Tosha,
How are you doing m'lovely? I hope your well and enjoying all your art and making. :-)
These photos are from the Buenos Aires metro 'Subte Línea C: Los Españoles' and their Islamic style designs set me off on a train of thought that took me through Morocco to Casablanca and our residency And-Art to you and our coffee and chat in the Welcome Trust that afternoon with Camilla back in January... what a long time ago that seems now! So anyways, I thought this was a good moment to say hi :-)
I was actually with Camilla just last week, in Buenos Aires where she's about to embark on a residency with Zona Imaginaria. It's the second time we've met up since starting our journeys, and it's really exciting to hear how each other are getting on.... we reckon we'll next cross paths in Bolivia in late September.
So, sending you a big hug and happy wishes for all your current projects and adventures....
Big love,
Kim

p.s. A point that caught my attention on this tube line: there was a sign explaining that the Islamic iconography on the tube line reflects the Arabic heritage of many important Spanish cities in the world. The wording of the sign at first had me confused (and Daniela too, who as a Columbian is a native Spanish speaker, so this was not just a translation issue) because it seemed to suggest that the Argentinian metro line had elected the designs not out of personal preference but in order to imitate Spanish cities... but after much thought Daniela and I re-therorised that if the designs was made in collaboration between Arentinians and Spaniards, then rather than being a case of copying it was more a case of context, the Spanish designers bringing with them Arabic influences elected to reflect the islamic influences in Spain in this Spanish-styled Argentinian tube line.
(A subtle difference, but an important one in terms of tone, we thought!)
:-)
What an amazing post! Feeling uber special, thank you Kim!!! My thoughts have been with you too and your journey, an of course, always there in spirit. You made an interesting point with the hybrid tube design, and I agree. It makes for a great allegory on community, collaboration and re-building. Onward bound!!! big love xoxo TOSHA
